Let’s Sign: BSL Building Blocks provides an accessible taster to the building blocks of British Sign Language (BSL). An excellent introduction to British Sign Language for Children.
The signs chosen include social and emotional concepts that should also complement programmes aimed at developing interpersonal competence and emotional literacy. They are a fresh alternative to naming everyday objects and have much greater potential for rich classroom discussion.
The children’s illustrations introduce the characters of Amy and Ben to demonstrate the signs, together with clear, easy to follow written descriptions.
The worksheets include signing games, fingerspelling and word matching exercises that have appeal to schools, families and youth groups, making it fun to learn.
The Times Educational Supplement Curriculum Special 26th October 2001…
“This resource values BSL as much as it values deaf people …..Let’s Sign has many strengths. It would undoubtedly stimulate children’s interest (I found it captivating). There is no tokenism; we are introduced to a real language in ways that do not compromise it.”
TALK the magazine of the National Deaf Children’s Society Issue 181 July/August 2001…
“The pictures of the signs are clear and show facial expressions as well as the movements involved in the signs…”
The Let’s Sign Series began in 2001 with the publication of the Let’s Sign: BSL Building Blocks Taster Pack which introduces BSL in handshape sets.
The Let’s Sign Dictionaries and materials have been developed in collaboration with the BSL community and are the most recommended reference for schools, families and BSL Level 1 and 2 courses, with numerous examples of regional variations that other resources may lack. They are refined and updated regularly to keep the work in keeping with a living language.
