BSL vocabulary has been used to great advantage for many years to support spoken communication for children and adults with additional speech and language needs (Sign Supported English).
In fact, the use of signs is of potential benefit to all children, deaf or hearing, and encourages an inclusive environment.
BSL Baby Sign offers a simplified form of sign language based on observations of Deaf parents signing with babies and infants to provide the basic building blocks and lay the foundations for language development through the visual channel.
The QR codes are between the sign drawings on each page. You will need an internet connection and smartphone or tablet camera to point at the code to access the link and see the signs.
There are additional notes and tips beneath the video clips and you can comment and ask questions. Your suggestions are welcome.
In the book, the signs are in four colour-coded topic groups for easy reference and begin with a summary page of the signs as a visual word list and useful reminder page to go back to and test what you have learned (with full Index page 39). The most commonly used baby-appropriate signs have been chosen but BSL signs can vary regionally and in context and it is suggested that learners check for these with their teachers and BSL community and for further understanding of the language and culture.
BABY SIGNING IN THE UK
Interest in Baby Signing has spread across this country since the idea first arrived from America 20 or so years ago. The teaching materials that accompanied the movement contained signs from American Sign Language (ASL), but with the help of the British Deaf Community, learners quickly realised that British Sign Language (BSL) is a separate language and the one most appropriate for Baby Signing in this country.
