The signs are British Sign Language (BSL) based and include regional BSL alternatives appropriate for a wide range of deaf and hearing sign language users.
Signs are arranged in topics followed by a separate alphabetical glossary with written descriptions alongside each sign. Also included are the Basic Handshape Key and Fingerspelling Alphabet.
The contents are based on work to support sexual relationships education and Down syndrome developed by Dr Wendy Uttley of the Down Syndrome Training and Support Service Ltd.
The signs cover the topics of:
- Growing Up
- Feelings
- Public and Private
- Personal Hygiene
- Greetings
- Friendships and Relationships
- Sexual Orientation
- Help, Assertiveness and Safe-guarding.
The sign vocabulary chosen enables the discussion of changes as a young person goes through puberty. These include physical and emotional changes and appropriate behaviours in private and public settings. It covers personal care and offering and asking for help when needed, so that young people can feel comfortable, safe and confident in their transition to adulthood.
